The night was alive
She could feel its pulse
It pressed down on the window
The night closing in
It wore a shroud of darkness
With the shroud it engulfed everything
And now it pressed on
Soon it would seep through the window
It would come in
Crawling
It would come in
And it would get her
She could ignore it
Try to forget it was there
Even though she heard it breathe
The night, it breathed besides her
And later she could hear it move
The claws scratching
Under the bed, it scratched
At her mattress it scratched
Where she lay her head
She closed her eyes tight
Maybe it would go away
If she counted long enough
It would be morning
Light
It would banish the dark
but then it touched her
